When ready to get your website up and running, asking questions is an important step that you must follow to fully understand what level of service and experience will be working with you.
There are tons of companies and freelancers. You also have overseas developers and third-party web development for DIY kind of people.
Having an interview with your potential new web developer is a standard practice and you or the developer should not feel uncomfortable by it. Information gathering will give you a clear idea of who you want to work with and which direction you want to go with.
We have scouted over 100 questions, asked to us and asked to other developers, and we have directed our attention to 10 that we believe can give you enough information to make a well based choice.
Experience
1. How long have you been in the industry?
Either working with a company or an individual, knowing how long they have been in the industry is a good place to start. This question, believe it or not, does not get asked frequently, however we believe it needs to.
2. Can I see your portfolio and references?
A portfolio to a web developer is a letter of presentation. Looking at portfolios can be fun, and sometimes can be a very eye-opening experience. References are less common but they exist, specially when you care about the level of customer service.
3. What is your primary industry?
Some developers are dedicated to specific markets (e-commerce, blogs, corporate, etc.) This can be a good thing, because you may be able to get high quality work. However, a well seasoned developer, should be able to show traits of working with different markets.
Practices and Technologies
4. What industry standards do you follow?
ALL developers should follow basic valid HTML and CSS. Also, developing with SEO and SEF in mind is a very good sign.
5. Do you offer CMS solutions?
CMS solutions have been proven over and over again, and developers that know how to use them are a great source. |
